ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Although house sparrows are an introduced species in Australia, they have become part of the urban landscape. Found in both cities and countryside, they are often associated with human habitation.
Although they are common, I still find their convivial chatter and liveliness endearing. At first glance they could be called brown. Yet they have warm-toned markings, especially males in breeding plumage.
This is a drawing of a female house sparrow standing still as a statue on a rustic wooden shelf. Next to the bird is an antique embossed jar. I particularly enjoyed capturing the light glowing on the mottled orange glass and the twists of the lid. It is a subject that I will return to, perhaps with a spray of flowers.
In the still-life tradition, there is a warm timelessness to this piece. For me, it evokes a feeling of comfort. It will enhance any space, hung in either a contemporary or an aged timber frame.
