The green rosella or Tasmanian rosella is a parrot native to Tasmania and Bass Strait islands. It is Australia’s largest rosella. Like most rosellas, the green rosella has a bell-like call in flight and a noisy chattering when foraging.

My studio in Sydney is close to a national park. Each morning another species of rosella, the crimson rosella, visit to chatter and nibble the grass seeds of my front lawn and when in season the port wine magnolia blooms. This endearing chattering is a backdrop to my morning work.

Here I have drawn a green rosella nibbling on seedheads with the light flickering through silhouetted trees in the background.
