Frequently asked questions
What is a giclée fine art print?
A ‘giclée’ print is the highest quality print available. Giclée prints are archival and with proper care will last well over 100 years. Printed with eight to twelve pigment-based fade-proof ink colours, giclée prints have a rich depth of colour reproducing every detail of the original art. The prints you’ll find here are all giclées.
What is the difference between a giclée print and a standard print?
A giclée print is far superior to a standard print. Standard art reproductions are made using only three inks and will fade quickly. A giclée is created using a large format printer with eight to twelve pigment-based fade-proof inks. This produces a print with exceptional richness and colour accuracy that will last a lifetime. The prints you’ll find here are all giclées.
What does archival mean?
Archival refers to the durability of the artwork. Archival prints are museum quality, produced with the highest standards of materials, using colour-fast inks on acid-free and lignin-free paper. With normal paper, acid and lignin retained within the wood pulp used to make the paper will break the paper down over time. This does not happen with archival materials. Archival paper resists yellowing and deterioration. The giclée prints you’ll find here are all archival. This means they are printed to last.
What is my giclée printed on?
The prints you’ll find here are printed on archival paper using Canson Infinity Rag Photographique 210gsm paper (for A4 and A3) and 310gsm paper (for A2 and A1). This paper is 100% cotton with maximum optical density (Dmax), meaning it is opaque and can hold the deepest black tone/ink that a printer can produce. This gives your prints a velvet depth of black and brilliant colour.
‘Canson® Infinity Rag Photographique is a 100% cotton museum grade white Fine Art and photo paper. The exceptional smooth white tone is achieved during manufacturing by introducing natural minerals to the process. It has been developed to address the need for continued longevity requirements in the Digital Fine Art market. Rag Photographique offers a unique extra smooth surface with a sensual feel. It also provides one of the highest achievable Dmax [maximum optical density] currently available on the market, making it ideal for fine art photography as well as fine art printmaking.’ ….quote by Canson Infinity
Will my print fit a standard size frame?
Yes. All prints are standard A sizes. This allows the option for custom framing, or purchasing standard A size frames in stores or online. Matted A4 prints are ready to be framed in a standard 11 x 14 inch frame.
What print sizes do you offer?
Giclée prints come in standard A sizes from A4 through to A1 depending on the artwork.
21 x 29.7 cm (A4) Open Edition
21 x 29.7 cm (A4) Open Edition - matted ready to be framed in a standard 11 x 14 inch frame
29.7 x 42 cm (A3) Limited Edition (edition size 250)
42 x 59.4 cm (A2) Limited Edition (edition size 100)
59.4 x 84.1 cm (A1) Limited Edition (edition size 25)
What is the difference between an Open Edition and a Limited Edition giclée print?
The difference between an Open Edition print and a Limited Edition print lies in the number of copies produced.
For an Open Edition Print there is no set limit on how many prints are made.
For a Limited Edition Print only a specific, limited number of prints are produced. Once all the prints in the edition are sold, no more are made, which can increase their value. Limited edition prints are numbered (e.g., 1/100) and signed by the artist, making them more exclusive and desirable for collectors. They also come with a signed certificate of authenticity.
Both Open Edition and Limited Edition prints include the Marie-Clarie Colyer embossment, authenticating them as archival authorised prints.
