A pair of Gouldian finches perch on a weathered log. These finches are native to the north of Australia. Once abundant, these birds are now in decline and listed as Near Threatened. With sound fire management of the grasslands and mature woodlands they require, efforts are being made to protect these iconic birds, so that once again vivid flocks will create rainbows of colour as they wheel across the sky.
