ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The Australasian crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus australis) is a diving bird that breeds in Australia and New Zealand. It was once widespread in New Zealand's south island, but is now mainly found on lakes in Canterbury and Otago. Birds are monogamous and establish and maintain their bonds through an elaborate ritualised display. Both parent's share incubation and feeding of the chicks, often carrying them on their backs until they become independent at around eleven weeks old. Their Maori name is kāmana.
Crested grebes have long been favourites of mine; despite the fact I’ve never actually seen one in the wild. One of the first sketches I ever did as a gift was of a grebe on its nest of reeds. I have enjoyed tranquil moments on the Kapiti coast watching the New Zealand dabchick (also a member of the grebe family) with its growing offspring attempting to clamber on to its back.
